'Sculpture by the Lakes' opens June 4th 2011
Tuesday 07 June 2011
On 4th June ‘Sculpture by the Lakes’ opens to the public. This unique sculpture park has been created by British sculptor Simon Gudgeon with the support of Halcyon Gallery.
The opening of ‘Sculpture by the Lakes’ marks a milestone in Simon Gudgeon’s career. The artist’s overwhelming passion for making sculpture is the driving force behind his creation of the sculpture park, which is a remarkable personal achievement.
Gudgeon has enjoyed enormous success in the last ten years, and his profile as an artist continues to grow.
Thirty of Gudgeon’s sculptures are placed around the park, which has been thoughtfully curated by the artist. All of the work exhibited in the park is inspired by nature and the artist’s fascination with symbolism, myth and legend relating to the spirit of birds, animals and man.
‘Sculpture by the Lakes’ is a constantly evolving landscape that provides an idyllic, pastoral setting for Gudgeon’s work. It is also a haven for some 91 species of wildlife, marrying the beauty of nature’s wild river landscape with the presentation of monumental outdoor sculpture.
“One of the defining aspects of our species is… that we make beautiful artworks because we find them pleasing to the eye and the soul. Some of that power is diminished when they are placed in a museum or gallery... Placing sculpture outdoors, where large pieces were intended to be, restores that power and that is why people will relate to them.”
Simon Gudgeon
‘Sculpture by the Lakes’ will be open from 4th – 19th June, 11.am – 6.00pm daily.
After 19th June 2011, entry will be by appointment only.
